Top films at the box office

There's a new king at the box office as Mickey 17 has ended Captain America: Brave New World's run atop the throne. The latest film from Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon-ho brought in $19.1 million. It is the highest domestic opening for the South Korean filmmaker, but maybe lower than what Warner Bros. was hoping for considering the film's reported budget of $118 million. It should be noted that Joon-ho's last film, the Best Picture winner Parasite, opened to $392,216 but ended with a final domestic total of $53.3 million. We will be keeping an eye on Mickey 17.

Coming in second place was the aforementioned Captain America: Brave New World as it brought in another $8.5 million in its fourth weekend. The film dropped 43 per cent and now has a domestic total of $176.5 million. It has been a steeper drop-off at the domestic box office than Disney and Marvel were hoping for; the film currently sits 32 on the list of Marvel films' domestic totals.

Last Breath dropped one spot at the box office to third place. The underwater thriller fell 46 per cent and brought in another $4.2 million. The film's current domestic total sits at $14.6 million.

Osgood Perkins' The Monkey came in fourth place, adding $3.9 million to its haul. The horror-comedy fell 39 per cent and has a domestic total of $31 million. With a reported budget between $10-11 million, the film is a box office success despite the mixed audience reviews.

Rounding out the top five this weekend was Paddington in Peru. The film grossed $3.85 million, a 16 per cent drop. Its domestic total currently sits at $36.9 million.
