It was announced this week at this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas that Keanu Reeves will officially be returning for John Wick: Chapter 5.
The news came as a delight and surprise for John Wick fans because Keanu's character seemingly was killed in the previous installment of the popular hitman franchise. His grave was shown, but it was never confirmed that John Wick had actually died.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson shared the news that Keanu will reprise his role alongside director Chad Stahelski and producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. “Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world. We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next,” Fogelson said.
No additional details, such as a release date or plot were revealed, which left John Wick fans speculating about how the assassin could have survived seemingly deadly injuries at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4.
The John Wick universe is expanding with several projects, including an animated prequel exploring John Wick's origins and a spinoff focused on blind assassin Caine, whom fans met in John Wick: Chapter 4, directed by and starring action legend Donnie Yen. Another spinoff titled Ballerina starring Ana de Armas and featuring Keanu Reeves is set for release on June 6, 2025. ~Alexandra Heilbron
